Two members of the Guyana Police Force attached to the Central Immigration Department were placed under close arrest after they were accused of menacingly demanding money from five Brazilians.
The ranks, a Corporal and a Constable, who were performing duties at the Immigration Boarding Section at Central Immigration and Passport Office, demanded $22,000 from each of the Brazilians for the processing of their documents pertaining to their departure from Guyana via Lethem.
The matter was reported to the ranks’ superiors who carried out an investigation.
Two officers from the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters visited the immigration department accompanied by one of the Brazilians.
One of the ranks involved in the scam was positively identified and was promptly placed under close arrest.
