…released on $500,000 bail
RELIANCE, EAST CANJE – Former New Amsterdam Mayor, Errol Alphonso, was yesterday slapped with an attempted murder charge and placed on $500,000 bail.
Alphonso is accused of discharging a loaded firearm at Charwin Vyphius and Aubrey Brandt, on September 3, last, with intent to murder.
The Lot 35 Penitentiary Walk, New Amsterdam resident’s son produced a manager’s cheque within minutes of the magistrate’s decision.
Sixty-eight-year-old Alphonso appeared before Magistrate Tajnarine Ramroop at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court and while in the dock, he appeared to be calm.
He is represented by attorneys-at-law Lloyd Thomas and Ramesh Rajkumar.
One of his lawyers, Thomas, told the court that the defendant was injured during the incident and was “on parole from the (New Amsterdam) hospital.”
In asking for reasonable bail, he informed the court that his client is well-known and is the owner of both movable and immoveable properties. He cited also Alphonso’s age, the place he resides and his martial status.
He also described the defendant as no flight risk and would attend court.
According to Mr. Thomas, the virtual complainants were both discharged from hospital on September 13 and are out of danger.
