The players involved in the National under-17 cricket trials, especially the batsmen, will have a final opportunity today to stake a claim for selection on the Guyana team which will participate in the regional under-17 tournament in Trinidad in December.
Essequibo pacer Kevin Fredericks (3-17) and Demerara batsman Shameer Fazal (29*) yesterday spearheaded Dexter Solomon’s X1 to a seven-wicket victory against Harrinarine Chattergoon’s X1 in the second and penultimate trial match at the DCC ground.
Fredericks bowled six impressive overs after Seon Daniels had picked up 2-27 from six overs of pace bowling on a flat track in the rain affected game which was reduced to 30 overs per side.
Chattergoon’s X1 limped to 100-9 off their allotted 30 overs as the consistent Quincy Ovid-Richardson (25), Jamally Odle (22) and Kamal Ramkissoon (15) who was run out for the second time in two days, were the only batsmen to reach double figures and the lack of big scores in the two trials matches after a low scoring Inter-County tournament should be a cause for concern.
Solomon’s X1 reached 105-3 to win off the last over as Fazal, whose unbeaten 29 lasted 76 and Delon Fernandes who finished unbeaten on 15 from 30 balls with two fours, added 36 in an unfinished fourth wicket stand as all of the bowlers except under-19 pacer Keon Joseph who conceded five wides and nine no-balls in his 1-24 from four overs, bowled economically.
Chattergoon’s wretched recent run of form continued when the talented right-hander from Albion edged Daniels to the Keeper after just scoring a single to leave the score on 14-1 before Ovid-Richardson and Ramkissoon added 36 for the second wicket before Ramkissoon was dismissed at 48-2.
Clinton Pestano missed a swinging full toss from Daniels and was bowled for a duck at 50-3 while Ovid-Richardson, who struck four fours in his 38-ball innings, was leg before to Fredericks who also had Kwame Crosse (1) caught and bowled to leave the score on 69-5.
And when Odle, the grandson of former West Indies wicketkeeper Milton Pydanna, was caught behind by the impressive Solomon off Fredericks at 85-6, nobody else in the order passed six in a disappointing performance.
Odle, one of the few batsmen willing to use their feet to the spinners and bat positively, struck two fours and an effortless straight six off Fredericks in his 22 and should be on the plane to Trinidad.
Dwane Singh (2-7) supported his Essequibo teammate Fredericks with the ball for Solomon’s X1 who were off to a solid 25-run start against Joseph who bowled fast but without control after missing the first match to participate in the Berbice senior trials on Tuesday.
Dropped by the wicketkeeper Andy Mohan on five off Joseph, Herell Greene (8) impetuously drove Joseph to mid-off to throw his wicket away.
Pint-size 13-year-old Dominique Rikhi displayed wonderful temperament and good technique before he was run out for a responsible 10 at 52-2 while Dayanand Roopnarine (3) drilled a catch off pacer Kevin Ogle to Chattergoon at short cover.
Fernandes got going with a fine sweep of West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan for a boundary and the pair of Fernandes and Fazal, both let off by wicketkeeper Mohan, who had a below par performance yesterday, remained unbeaten at the end with cautious batting. Today’s final trial game is fixed for the DCC ground and play is expected to start at 09:30hrs.
