Four cross dressers were forced to seek refuge in the home of a Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara resident, after they were attacked by a group of villagers on Tuesday night.
The cross dressers were eventually rescued by the police who took them to safety amidst the taunting and threats of the villagers.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the men who were dressed like women were imbibing at a bar in the village of Golden Grove when they angered residents with their behaviour.
At first two villagers confronted the men and a heated argument ensued, prompting other villagers to join in.
The argument got worse and several villagers armed with sticks and bottles attacked the group who bolted for safety.
They ran all the way to the neighbouring village of Nabaclis where they forced their way into the home of a resident with whom they were familiar.
But the residents did not back off; instead they hurled missiles at the home, urging the owner to let the cross dressers out.
The homeowner, afraid that her property would be damaged, proceeded to spray a noxious gas to ward off the crowd but this only incensed them further and more missiles rained down on the house.
In the process the homeowner’s car was slightly damaged.
This newspaper was unable to ascertain if anyone was arrested.
This is the first time that such an attack has occurred on the East Coast of Demerara where many cross dressers gather at popular night spots.
