Captain and man-of-the-match Roopnarine Persaud snared 3-19 then returned with the bat to smash a quick fire 18 ball 43 spiced up with 3 mighty sixes and 4 majestic fours to lead Sans Souci Riders to an emphatic 7-wicket win over Sans Souci Jaguars in the final of the Cell Zone / Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company sponsored 20/20 competition contested last Sunday in Wakenaam.
After winning the toss, Riders invited the Jaguars to take first strike and they were only able to muster 134-9 off their 20 overs due to steady and controlled bowling from Riders led by spinner, Persaud.
Olwyn Paton made the top score of 27 (2 sixes & 2 fours), Satnarine Sahadeo (3 fours) and Charles Benjamin (2 fours) supported with 15 each. Sadeek Mohamed chipped in with 13 (1 six & 1 four) while there was 11 each from Gladwin Henry (2 fours) and Ricardo Adams (1 four & 1 six).
The batsmen got promising starts but were never allowed the chance to get going due to good bowling aided by equally good fielding by the Riders. Persaud received decent support from Nokta (2-48), Oyono Sampson, Vickram Ramnarine and Goornauth Khemraj all taking one wicket each.
Riders set about the task of overhauling Jaguars’ score in business like manner with Wayne Osbourne smashing the opening bowlers to all parts of the ground with the small but very appreciative crowd cheering him along. Osbourne who rattled up 33 from 20 balls with one six and 3 fours was dropped on 21 with the score on 32 but he did not last much longer as he went with the score on 43-1.
His opening partner, Varounie Sasepaul played an excellent supporting role for his 30 which contained 2 fours.
With the fall of Osbourne’s wicket, the Jaguars felt that would have gotten a respite from his attacking play but Roopnarine Sasepaul was even more menacing than Osbourne as he waded into the bowlers for a sparking and attacking innings of 43 off just 18 balls decorated with 3 sixes and 4 fours.
After his demise Vickram Ramnarine (14) and Sampson (10) saw Riders to victory at 141-3 with 17 balls to spare.
All the teams participating in the competition received trophies, the others being Zeelandia, Good Success and Maria’s Pleasure.
The batsman with the most runs in the competition was Navishaul Pooran while the top bowler was Vickram Ramnarine with 13.
Cell Zone’s CEO Andy Lindo, born and bred in Wakenaam was on hand to assist with the presentation of prizes and in brief remarks stated his company in association with GT&T was more than elated to be giving back towards the upliftment of sports on the Island.
“We are very happy to be assisting with the continued development of cricket here and we are more than encouraged that a number of young talented players participated. We also believe that good clean sport help to build self esteem and self confidence and you must aim for even greater and bigger things in the game. I am confident that some of you will go on to represent the Essequibo region, Guyana and ultimately the West Indies.”
Lindo also encouraged the players and the supporters to say no to drugs and yes to life. Parents were challenged to encourage their children to get involved in sports.
Cell Zone’s Manager Mark Seymour was also present along with members of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee.
And Romel Heernan, one of the teachers on the Island, was impressed with the performance of the Riders and presented the team with a monetary donation.
