Noble House Seafoods Indoor Hockey…Old Fort ‘A’ maintain ascendancy

Beginning with a 3-goal advantage, Old Fort ‘A’ had to pull out all the stops to repel a spirited challenge from Everest Hikers ‘A’ that ensured they maintain their ascendancy at the top of the points table last Monday night, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Playing in the Noble House Seafoods Goals Galore Indoor Hockey Competition the two teams provided the fair-sized gathering with a delightful exhibition of team play that provided some classical goals as Old Fort held on for a close 8-7 victory, actually being outscored 5-3.

On target for the winners was Askofu Simon, who netted a brace and John Abrams, while Devin Munroe and Robert France also lashed in doubles along with a single strike from Randy Hope.

In the night’s other results, GCC ‘A’ (+4) drew with Shakatan (+6) 7-7 with Alan Fernandes belting in a pair along with a solitary goal from Orland Semple. Phillip Xavier made the lone response for Shakatan.

It must be noted that goalkeeper Michael Xavier, who recently returned from a one year stint at the London Metropolitan University was outstanding between the uprights and has shown tremendous improvement and certainly seems to be a serious contender for national duties.

GCC Spartans (+6) edged Hikers ‘B’ (+3) 7-6. Brianna Gordon scored the lone goal for the Spartans, while Quillon Williams, a double and Shaquille Assanah, a single were the players on target for Hikers ‘B’.

Hikers (+4) Ladies then defeated GCC Tigers (+4) 6-5. Cora Towler and Maria Munroe were the players on target for the winners, while Shebiki Baptiste made the lone response for the Tigers and in the other game Old Fort ‘’ (+3) beat Degenerates (+1) 10-6 in an exciting affair.

For the victors, T. Joaquin netted four goals, Dwayne Alleyne, a double and Robert Hussain one. For Degenerates, Timothy Jonas scored a pair, while there was one apiece for Ivor Thompson, Marcus Fiedtkou and Rawl Davson.

The Old Fort ‘A’ and Everest Hikers lived up to expectations despite both teams playing without a couple of their stars.

Old Fort’s Dwight Abrahams and goalkeeper Tony Cole were bound for Trinidad and Tobago as did Everest’s Jerazeno Bell, while Marc King was also missing from their line-up.

However, the game begun with Hikers attacking deep inside the opposition’s half and went ahead very early when Munroe benefited from a rebound off partial interception and slammed his shot past goalkeeper Mikhail Smith.

The dreadlocked Abrams then ensured that Old Fort maintain their advantage after scoring off an accurate pass from Askofu Simon.

France then tapped in a cross delivered from the right by Timothy McIntosh as Everest trailed 4-6.
On the stroke of half time, Hope got onto the end of another clinical delivery from McIntosh and hammered a powerful shot past a hapless Smith.

The second period was played with the same intensity as the teams battled for the win and Simon restored Old Fort’s two-goal edge when he slid one past Azad DeAbreu stationed between the uprights.

Once again, Everest narrowed the deficit to one as France completed his double, flicking a shot past Smith, but Askofu Simon was again to the rescue with another solid finish off a feed by his brother Aderemi.

Munroe netted one more before the final whistle sounded.
The tournament continues tonight with four more matches.

Commencing at 17:30 hrs, Hikers ‘B’ tackle Tigers; Spartans take on Western Dragons; Hikers ‘B’ engage Degenerates and Dragons collide with Old Fort ‘B’.
