Parents of students attending the North Georgetown Secondary School are very concerned about the conditions under which their children are accommodated at the learning institution.
Yesterday, several parents visited Kaieteur News to voice these concerns, since according to them, nothing is being done to rectify the situation.
Speaking with this newspaper, one parent said that he took his daughter to enroll at the school but was unaware that there was no furniture to accommodate the incoming students.
He said it was during the orientation when parents and students were being familiarized with the institution that he learnt that he had to purchase furniture to comfortably accommodate his child.
Another parent said that the cheapest chair with writing provision is $6,000.
One parent added a complete chair and desk is to the tune of $10,500.
However, what is disturbing to the parents is the fact that several vendors at the Bourda market are selling on desks that are labeled ‘North Georgetown Secondary School.’
“Even the vendor right outside the school selling on a desk with the school name on it and when the issue was raised with the Head Mistress she said that maybe someone who used to attend the school gave the vendor their desk. Instead of asking the man where he got the desk from she just dismiss me,” a parent told Kaieteur News.
At present, parents are assisting with repair works at the institution.
“I went to carry lunch for my daughter and I was surprised to see what she was sitting in. I had to hang my child’s lunch bag on a nail on the wall. Somebody needs to do something,” a parent said.
The parents also pointed out that while there is no furniture, there are also no fans at the institution.
Kaieteur News was told that one parent purchased three fans on Monday for his child’s classroom but when a check was made yesterday, the fans were in an office.
When Kaieteur News contacted the Head Mistress, Annette Pickett, said that there is indeed a furniture problem at the institution but dismissed the claim that parents were asked to purchase chairs for their children.
“We need more furniture because we do not have furniture in some classrooms,” Pickett said.
This newspaper was also told that representation was made by the parents to the Ministry of Education on the issue but that was to no avail.
