Eustace Rodriguez, 43, of Kato Village, Lethem, was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly having a shotgun in his possession, knowing that he is not the holder of a firearm licence. It is alleged that the accused committed the offence on September 10.
When Rodriguez, who speaks in an Indigenous dialect, was asked to plead, he could not quite understand what the magistrate was saying. And as such, acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
The man explained to the court that he is a father of five and earns a living as a farmer. Bail was denied, and the matter was transferred to the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
