increases

The five City Constables responsible for security at the Mandela Avenue dumpsite are presently on a ‘work-to-rule’ protest as they seek to collect the temporary living allowances owed to them.

Yesterday, the constables took the decision to turn up to work without doing anything in particular, since no decision was taken to have their allowances paid to them.

Speaking with Kaieteur News, General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union, Carvil Duncan, said that the constables’ salaries are tied into police salaries.

This means that, whatever increases the police get, they automatically reflect in the salaries of the City Constables.

According to Duncan, the City Constables were paid a five percent increase on their salaries, retroactive from January to May last.

However, they are yet to be paid the increase for the months that followed, along with their temporary living allowance which President Bharrat Jagdeo has given. Duncan said that he has since sent a letter to City Hall urging that the constables be paid their monies.

In response to the letter, Duncan said, he was told that the constables would have been paid by mid-month. No such payments have been made.

According to the GLU General Secretary, he has also given City Hall an ultimatum for all workers who have not received an increase since 2007.

Should there not be any response on this issue within 72 hours, Duncan said, all City Council workers would go on strike.
