Grace Hercules(c), flanked by Benjamin (l), shows off her hardware moments after being declared the winner. To her left is and Adams.
Lindener, Grace Hercules, amassed a total of 5 points and a positive spread of 159 to cart off the inaugural Novelty Handicap Championships when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged that tournament at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands, Sunday last.
Banker, Paul Adams scored 4 points with a positive spread of 334 to occupy the runner-up slot while former professional boxer and journalist, Michael Benjamin occupied the final podium spot, also with 4 points, but a lower spread of 97.
Hercules traveled all the way from Linden and even though she won her first game over Adams by a mere 5 points, she presented herself as a force to be reckoned with.
She was a little more asserted in the second set, shutting out Benjamin by 76 points. The players subsequently voted for an early lunch.
Hercules continued her winning ways just after lunch against Ulric Harris whom she devoured as though her last meal was a distant memory. She won that set by 79 points.
The in-form James Krakowsky was next up on the list and Hercules disposed of him with similar voracity, winning by a massive 173 points margin.
In the penultimate round Hercules continued to dispose of the favourites by sidelining Moen Gafoor by 31 points.
She was set to amass a flawless 6 points when Orlando Michael checked her progress by a whooping 126 points.
By then Hercules had already chalked up an unassailable 5 points and she was formally adjudged the tournament champion.
Local banker, Paul Adams and former boxing champion and journalist, Michael Benjamin both finished with 4 points apiece but Adams was adjudged the runner up by dint of a higher spread of 225. Benjamin completed the podium position with 4 points and a positive spread of 97.
Hercules has always shown promise and her level of commitment always stood her in good stead to rank among the best in the sport.
Her astuteness never came to the fore because of the involvement of players the ilk of national champion, Fred Collins, Ulric Harris and Colin Chichester among other top seeds.
Yesterday’s tournament was designed to give the weaker players a realistic chance of coming to the fore and they all responded well.
The next tournament, the GASP open is scheduled for Sunday September 21 at the same venue.
