Shivnarine Chanderpaul should be properly recognized by Guyana for his stellar achievements with an award higher than the Golden Arrow of Achievement (A.A) which was “hurriedly bestowed” on him at the end of July.
This is according to leader of the Alliance For Change, Raphael Trotman, who used the opportunity at the party’s most recent press briefing to extend his party’s congratulations to Chanderpaul for being named the ICC’s Player of the Year.
“Shiv has made us all proud once again and we hail his monumental achievements and the humble and dedicated way in which he has gone about establishing a sterling cricketing career.”
Chanderpaul, 34, is the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket with 819 runs scored at an average of 91.00 in the last calendar year.
The Guyanese left-hander hit three hundreds and six fifties in just eight tests.
“I’m honoured to be given this prestigious award,” said Chanderpaul, who received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy at the annual ICC Awards in Dubai.
The prolific Guyana and West Indies star batsman recently displaced Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara as the leading batsman on the ICC Test Player Rankings, and was subsequently appointed by President Bharrat Jagdeo as a member of the Order of Service of Guyana and awarded the Golden Arrow of Achievement.
An Office of the President release at the announcement informed that “…the President of the Republic of Guyana, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Guyana and Chancellor of the Orders of Guyana, is pleased to appoint Shivnarine Chanderpaul as a member of the Order of Service of Guyana and has awarded him the Golden Arrow of Achievement for his consistently outstanding performance as a Cricketer, especially as a Batsman, at the National, Regional and International levels”.
Chanderpaul joined an illustrious group by becoming the fourth West Indian batsman to reach 8, 000 runs in Test cricket on the fifth and final day of the third Digicel Test against Australia recently. The reliable left-hander ended the series with an aggregate of 442 runs to win the man-of-the-series award.
In 2005, he was appointed West Indies captain during a bitter contracts dispute, and celebrated with a double-century in front of his home fans.
In April 2006, Chanderpaul resigned as captain citing a need to focus on his batting.
