Forty-five-year-old Patrick Richmond is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he was allegedly beaten and burnt by enraged villagers on Thursday morning last.
Richmond told this newspaper that on Thursday around 11:30 hrs, he was executing maintenance duties at a location close to his home in Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara, when he observed two men driving up to the worksite in a pickup truck with ladders inside.
He said the men approached him, one armed with a golf club, and without a word began to rain blows on him. Richmond said between the beatings he was by then receiving from both men, they were angrily accusing him of ‘breaking into their house’ the night before.
The injured Richmond said that soon after the men tied his feet and hands and bundled him into the vehicle after which they drove to the home of a resident in the village he knew well. He said around this time the men were joined by four others who began throwing in a few punches of their own.
He said one man proceeded to boil a pot of water and when the steam was hissing from beneath the pot cover, he threw it on him, severely burning him on the upper back, shoulders, entire chest and some areas along the abdomen.
According to Richmond, the men then mercilessly poured a large bottle of ‘Marvex’ bleach on his already searing body even as he was screaming in agony.
He said around this time he lost consciousness and when he ‘came around’ shortly after they poured salt on his injuries, inflicting even greater agony as they muttered among themselves about ‘corning and cooking him’.
He said they resumed the beating although he tried to explain that he was at home on the night of the supposed break and enter, with family members. He said the men refused to accept it was a case of mistaken identity and beat him until he ‘blacked out’ again.
He recounted that during this period the men removed his bonds and dragged him outside the premises and left him there.
Richmond continued that, on regaining consciousness, he half dragged himself several metres where he was rescued by relatives who took him to the city hospital.
The matter was reported to the Sparendaam Police Station where ranks have begun investigations.
