Sans Souci Riders defeated Sans Souci Jaguars by 7 wickets to win the Rakesh and Reshma Thomas 20/20 cricket competition at Good Success Wakenaam.
Jaguars won the toss and elected to take first strike in front of a large and colourful crowd which included the chairman of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee Asif Ahmad and found themselves in early trouble as opener Zaheer Mohamed (1) was caught at short third man as he attempted to hit former Guyana U-15 pacer Oyono Sampson out of the ground.
Jaguars never recovered from that position despite an entertaining 5th wicket partnership of 40 between Satnarine Sahadeo 41 (4×4, 2×6) and Gladwin Henry 32 (3×4, 1×6) and eventually ended on 117 for 9 when their 20 overs expired.
Sampson, Roopnarine Persaud, Varounie Sasepaul and Nokta Moses picked up two wickets each for Riders who in reply received an early set back losing the wicket of Sasepaul (2) bowled by pacer Olwin Paton in the third over to leave the score at 10 – 1.
Roopnarine Persaud then joined Wayne Osborne and despite the early set back, they took the attack to bowlers hitting them to all parts of the ground as the crowd was brought to life.
The pair added 90 runs for the second wicket, a partnership which completely took the game away from Jaguars.
Persaud was eventually LBW to leg spinner Moses Ramnarine for a well played 45, which included 4x4s and 2x6s, and Ramnarine also sent back Munesh Heera (2) to end with figures of 2 for 26 off 4 overs. Wayne Osborne, who ended unbeaten on 54 and Oyono Sampson 4 not out, ensured there were no further hiccups as their team overhauled the target with six overs to spare.
Roopnarine Persaud was named man-of-the-match while each member of the winning team received medal. Riders collected the winning trophy and the Jaguars received the runner’s up prize.
Rakesh Thomas congratulated the winning team and thanked the other teams for participating while Mrs. Reshma Thomas said that they will try to make it an annual event. Chairman of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee Asif Ahmad thanked the sponsors for coming on board.
