A newly-constructed state-of-the-art $18.5M primary school was on Saturday commissioned by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds during annual Heritage Day celebrations at Santa Aratak, in Region Three.
This was part of the activities for Amerindian Heritage Month, which is currently being observed.
Santa Aratak had both a nursery and primary school.
However, the primary school was dilapidated and $14M was allocated to construct a new building. Construction commenced last October.
The old building had the capacity to accommodate 192 children, while the new school will serve over 400 students.
Hundreds of schools have been built or rehabilitated in Amerindian communities nearer to children’s homes, to encourage attendance as the Amerindian Affairs and Education Ministries have been working closely to ensure that more Amerindian children receive education.
