40 Block became the first victim of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport – organised Plaisance Inter-Block Football Tournament when they suffered their second defeat in as many matches, going down 1-0 to Goedverwagting yesterday, at the Community Centre ground.
The player to orchestrate their demise was Teon Lowe, who headed in from close range off a cross from the left flank in the 50th minute.
In the first game of the double-header, Industry, who also lost their opening encounter to 110 managed to escape elimination after holding the youthful Front Side to a goalless draw.
In the feature game, Goedverwagting withstood an early onslaught from the 40 Block forwards and kept the contest even at halftime.
In the second period, both teams pressed on with urgency, especially 40 Block, but Goedverwagting held firm and mounted several counterattacks with Lowe proving to be a menace for the 40 Block defence.
In a probing run down the left wing, he reached onto an almost perfect cross and leaped into the air, beating the opposition’s goalkeeper in the process to glance his header into an unmarked goal.
No team managed to score after that, resulting in victory for Goedverwagting and heartbreak for 40 Block.
In the opening match, Front Side packed with a number of Under-17 players proved more than worthy opponents against their more senior counterparts.
They, however, were guilty of squandering many chances and may rue their mistake as the tournament progresses.
Despite that, they seemed to be a solid unit and beating them may take some doing.
The competition continues next Sunday with another double header planned with Front Side taking on 110 and Goedverwagting tackling Scheme.
