Despite suffering a back wheel puncture on lap 11, Guyana’s leading cyclist Alonzo ‘Sprint King’ Greaves lived true to his name by outsmarting 15 year-old Christopher Holder to win the feature 35-lap event with at the 9th Annual DeSinco Group of Companies/Milkaut 11-race cycling meet yesterday at the National Park.
Greaves, who broke away from the pack from lap one and established a commanding lead for most of the race, won in a time of one hour 27 minute 10.84 seconds beating Holder by one wheel.
2007 winner Darren Allen seemingly was not able to keep up with the early pace set by Greaves and Holder and failed to finish the race. A number of riders also suffered the embarrassment of being lapped and based on the rules of the race had to exit immediately on suffering such a faith.
Greaves, who also took 5 of the 8 prime prizes, the others taken by Holder, suffered a puncture about 50 meters away from the starting line on lap 11 but prompt action by his support staff enabled him to change wheels quickly and get back into contention.
Holder kept going after the puncture but was eventually sucked in by Greaves who had connected with the second bunch of Christopher Persaud, Enzo Matthews and veteran Kennard Lovell. Thereafter, it was a cat and mouse game between the riders in the last 10 laps.
In the sprint for the finish line, Lovell broke away with about 250 meters to go but was quickly taken in by Holder who was looking good with Greaves closely behind. But with about 20 meters to go, Greaves again proved that he is unbeatable in sprints by pulling away from holder to win comfortably.
Matthews finished third with Persaud and Lovell taking fourth and fifth, the only riders to finish the race, 18 faced the starting line.
Lovell also won the veterans 50 and under race ahead of Virgil Jones and Davendra Ramnarine.
