DEAR EDITOR,
The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) strongly condemns the gruesome, ghastly and inhumane acts of violence perpetuated upon its members, at the Wismar Hospital on the night of September 11, 2008.
The act of rape committed upon a member of the GPSU or any other human can only be described as beastly, and society must constantly work together to ensure that such violence is eliminated from among us.
Additionally, the criminal act of robbery committed against citizens, and public officers in particular, must be condemned by all Lindeners and Guyanese.
Further, and as reported, the statement made by the rapist to his victim “you now dead” suggests that he maybe infected with a deadly sexually transmitted disease, and when he committed the criminal act must have intended to pass the disease to his victim. This is a criminal act.
The GPSU therefore calls upon the relevant authorities to do everything within their power to ensure that justice is done in this matter.
Further, the GPSU issues a call to all citizens, especially of Linden, to condemn such criminal intent and for the relevant authorities to institute appropriate amendments to the Criminal Law Offences Act to include the willful transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases with appropriate punishment.
The GPSU stand committed and is fully supportive of its members, especially at this time.
