By Franklin WilsonThe Guyana Defence Force (GDF) have taken the lead from Sunburst Camptown after a number of weeks following their 2-0 blanking of Santos when rivalry in the 2008 Cellink Plus Premier League continued on Friday evening at the Tucville Ground.
Springing another surprise was Uprising who took a point in their drawn encounter with Fruta Conquerors in a match that could have gone the way of the former if they had buried their opportunities.
But the GDF, made light work of a Santos unit that has improved with the acquisition of a number of players but still lack the offensive bite that is needed at this level in order to win.
National forward Dwight Peters was again on target yet again for the solid looking Army by tucking in their first goal after 20 minutes of play. Unfortunately he had to leave the field just before the half due to an injury and was replaced by Gavin Wilson who is now back with the GDF.
Wilson marked his return with a beautiful goal in the 79th minute that sealed maximum points for his side. The ball was volleyed powerfully past goalkeeper O’Neal Heywood from another deadly cross in the area even as the ball was dipping on Wilson who connected to put it away in classical style.
The victory for the GDF put them at the top on 23 points, two more than Sunburst Camptown with defending champions Alpha United on 18.
The loss for Santos places them in a tight spot as they remain on 4 points and faces the prospect of being one of the two teams being relegated to the division one ranks.
Uprising, while knowing for sure that they are destined to return to the division one level, continues to show marked improvement in this second round of the Premier League as they secured their second draw in as many matches.
They even had the chance to put away Fruta Conquerors but did not do so as Omally Nassy missed out on a double when he threw away a golden chance while in the 6 yard box, midway in the second half. He had given Uprising the lead in the 23rd minute.
Conquerors, presently fifth in the standings with 12 points is another of the teams who continues to struggle but they were able to take an equal share of the points when captain Neville Stanton rose above the Uprising defence to head home from a free kick in the 57th minute.
The Fruta side were kept on their back foot by a rejuvenated Uprising but were able to keep them at bay.
Competition is set to continue on Tuesday as the league winds down. Sunburst Camptown is set to renew rivalry with Pele when they clash in the feature game. Pele currently occupies the sixth place in the eight team league with 9 points.
Open rivalry from 18:00hrs brings together defending champions Alpha United and the ever improving GFC who are fourth with 13 points.
