The athletics community will pause in anxiety today when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) hosts its 2008 National Youth and Junior Championships at the Enmore Community Centre Ground from 10am.
The apprehension will come as a result of the evolution of the sport in recent times with most of the old rivalries among youth and juniors now elevated to the senior level. A fresh breed of athletes will be introduced today.
AAG President, Claude Blackmore had his reservations when Kaieteur Sport contacted him for a comment yesterday. He opted out of any predications, choosing to remain optimistic about the day’s events instead.
“We’ll see what happens. This is an athletics [school] term and I know some schools will cease the opportunity,” Blackmore offered, adding that he knows that St. Joseph’s High School, for instance, has registered its team for the meet.
Apart from the seasoned clubs: Upper Demerara, Progressive Youth, Running Brave and Royal Youth Movement, the AAG has also allowed secondary schools to enter the double–tiered competition at Enmore.
The youth aspect of the meet is for athletes under–18 years old while the junior meet is for competitors under–20 years old. Both meets were slated for earlier this year but inclement weather forced several cancellations.
Blackmore said that both meets are to conclude the AAG’s International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) mandatory schedule for this year. He said that the meets, along with the national senior trials, are IAAF requisites.
According Blackmore, those youths that are successful, in good time, will be identified for next month’s South American Youth Championships in Columbia. Many of the top youth athletes will have their eyes set on that event.
The word on the street is that 16–year–old prodigy: Jonathan Fagundes is home for the youth meet while the Shabazz clan will also be looking to impress the AAG. This is reportedly Alika Morgan’s last junior year.
