Sedition accused Oliver Hinckson made another appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates Court before Chief Magistrate (Ag) Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
At the start of yesterday’s deliberations, special prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin called for the prosecution’s witness to commence testimony against Hinckson.
When the witness, a female, commenced her testimony, defence attorney Vic Puran interjected and told the court that the evidence that the witness is giving should be more fundamental, hinting that it could have been flawed.
Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson–Ogle then summoned all attorneys in the matter to her bench, and after a lengthy discussion the matter was adjourned and Hinckson was further remanded until September 18.
Hinckson was charged earlier this year for using inciting language to promote a terrorist act. The accused was granted bail on July 11 by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle, but this was later overturned by Justice William Ramlall in the High Court.
During Hinckson’s last appearance, his lawyers raised the issue that their client’s life is in danger and there are forces that want to hinder the outcome of the case.
Attorney Nigel Hughes had also asked that his client be given his pre-trial liberty, but the prosecution had objected to bail being granted on the ground that the crime is a serious one.
Since Hinckson’s incarceration, their have been calls by many prominent members of society to have him released. Hinckson has been imprisoned for the past six months.
