Onus on teachers to implement new teaching methods in schools – Education Official
Although the exhibition of teaching and learning resources which came as part of the Education Month activities concluded yesterday, there are expectations that newly introduced teaching methods will be inculcated at schools countrywide with a view of boosting the level of literacy and numeracy.
The four-day-long activity which, was conducted at the National Centre for Educational Research and Development (NCERD), saw the attendance of a number of students and teachers, as well as parents and other members of the public.
And according to National Curriculum and Materials Adviser, Ms Florence Sukhdeo, the exhibition which served to highlight the various techniques and materials through which effective learning could occur was indeed a success.
She expounded that while some of the materials are already being utilised in some schools, some were unveiled to the public for the first time at the exhibition.
Materials such as the ‘Big Nursery books’, Ms Sukhdeo related, are teaching materials that teachers can utilise as a modern style of teaching students.
These materials have been recently printed by the Education Ministry and have been distributed in sets of ten to nursery level schools.
According to Ms Sukhdeo, the materials, which consist of supporting materials such as picture cards to enable teachers to teach reading skills, was in fact one of the high points of the exhibition.
She disclosed that not only teachers were intrigued by the novel style of teaching, but the several parents who were there as well.
And for the first time this year, the exhibition saw the introduction of a primary room which also highlighted the various ways in which the delivery of education is extended.
But even though the exhibition has come to an end, Ms Sukhdeo related, it is expected that the methods of teaching in schools will be enhanced.
She disclosed that there are instances when teachers are exposed to improved teaching methods but fail to implement these when they return to the classroom.
For this reason, she pointed out, follow-up workshops will be streamlined as well as regular visits to schools.
In essence, Ms Sukhdeo said, efforts will be made to ensure that all measures advocated during the exhibition are implemented through a monitoring process.
September has been designated Education Month, and this year it is being observed under the theme ‘Education of the child: a parent and teacher obligation’.
