Detectives have gathered what they consider to be ‘strong’ circumstantial evidence against a 17-year-old boy in connection with the murder of 13-year-old Kavita Panday, who was beaten, raped and left to drown in a canal near her Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice home.
They are likely to know today whether he will be charged with murder. The teen is a brother of the 14-year-old who was initially detained in connection with Panday’s murder.
Kaieteur News understands that the elder brother has admitted that he was with the victim shortly before she was slain, but insists that he did not kill her.
Kavita Panday’s mother has told detectives that she had seen the suspect with her daughter heading into the Panday’s farmland to chase cows that were damaging the crops.
An autopsy revealed that Panday sustained multiple injuries and died from drowning. It also showed that the teen was sexually assaulted.
According to a source, who described it as “a horrible death”, Panday was struck with a blunt object which left a large bruise by one of her temples.
Her eyes were also swollen, while there was a bruise on one of her hips and other bruises on her genitals. In addition, there was muddy water in her stomach and a foreign object in her wind-pipe.
This suggests that the killer submerged the unconscious teen in the canal after raping and beating her. Kaieteur News understands that detectives found no scratches or other physical evidence on the suspect.
Panday, of Lot 122 Block ‘D’ Bath Settlement, was discovered partly submerged in a canal near her home at around 14:00 hrs on Tuesday.
The victim’s father, Rajesh Panday, said that her underwear and tights were below her knees and the left side of her face was swollen and ‘black and blue’, while the left side of her abdomen was badly bruised.
Reports indicate that the girl was last seen in the company of a teenage neighbour, while heading into the Panday’s farm.
Police had initially arrested the suspect’s 14-year-old brother, who is said to be known by the same name as his elder sibling.
