Shameful site!!! Kaieteur Sports roaming camera took some shots of what used to be one of the premier sport facilities in Guyana. This is the current state of the Providence ground which once boasted the best 400metre track in Guyana.
On the football section there are loads of mud with high grass, obviously noting is being done to hasten the leveling of the mud to bring the field to a state of play.
The cricket section has lots of tire tracks purportedly made by a tractor. The stand to the western section is in a dilapidated state. The recently built centre is in good shape and houses an active Day Care but the female washrooms are not working.
This facility which is a stones throw away from the Providence National Stadium has the potential to be a great multi purpose arena since it also has the space to house a Basketball Court and a Multi Purpose Court which can be used for Volleyball and Netball among other disciplines.
Can you imagine a facility like this being neglected to this level in this modern day and age especially when there are continued cries by associations and federations for proper facilities to keep our youngsters active?
Can the persons who are vested with the powers to take care of this facility do something worthwhile with it?
The energies of our young people need to be channeled in the right direction and we as senior persons in the society vested with the powers to make positive change are messing up.
The time has come for positive action to make the way for our youths to be gainfully active, and what better avenue than sports.
We need urgent action to get this facility back to what it used to be where school sports, football and cricket kept it going.
We at Kaieteur Sports are making the first pitch by highlighting this venue and would hope something is done speedily to return it to its intended use.
