Murder a bath settlement… Teenaged girl died from drowning and multiple injuries
– autopsy confirms rape

A post mortem examination performed on the body of 13-year-old Kavita Panday has revealed that she died from asphyxia due to drowning.
But according to a senior police official, this does not mean that murder has been ruled out since the post mortem which was performed by pathologist Dr. Brijmohan also revealed that Panday suffered from other injuries.
This is in addition to the strong possibility that the dead teen was raped.
“From all appearances, she was raped and then beaten. However, the beating did not cause her death and whoever is responsible threw her into the canal,” a senior police official in Berbice told this newspaper.
Panday’s body was found in a canal at around 14:00 hours on Monday, just over an hour after she was seen going into her parents’ farm at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
Police continue to interrogate a 14-year-old boy who was seen entering the farm with Panday shortly before the shocking discovery of the teen’s body.
Investigators had observed scratch marks on the 14-year-old’s neck and were suspicious that it was caused as a result of a struggle.
The youth claimed that he sustained the scratches while climbing a genip tree, a fact that was substantiated by other villagers.
A check of the dead girl’s fingernails revealed that there were no traces of skin residue.
The 14-year-old’s father is also in police custody assisting with investigations but the source said that there is not enough evidence to incriminate him in the murder.
Investigations are continuing.
