Transportation and other unavoidable challenges were responsible for a poor turnout forcing organizers to cancel the race walk that was scheduled to be staged Sunday morning from the Kitty Pump Station to the Umana Yana.
At 66 years old, Maurice Fagundes the oldest race walker. He has sent out a challenge to anyone his age to match his accomplishments.
However, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC), David Kirton disclosed that another event has been planned that will compensate for Sunday’s aborted activity.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport moments after the decision was taken to cancel the event, Kirton said that the next meet, a junior race walk around Soesdyke, will be held next Saturday. This race has been organized specially for residents of the Linden/Soesdyke area.
It will precede a ten lap walk race, scheduled to get underway next Sunday around the inner circuit of the National Park. Kirton intimated that the CSTC is a relatively young organization and as such, is experiencing several teething problems. He said that the club is affiliated to the Race Walk Association (RWA) in the USA and that entity is now in the process of putting together a package for Guyana that may very well see the sport becoming popularized.
Kirton said among the assistance expected from the parent company are training modules and several DVDs that discuss the intricacies of race walking. He said that the CSTC has also been promised other items that include sneakers, trunks and sweaters. The RWA has also promised to dispatch a coach to Guyana to assist with the training of local race walkers.
Touching on the issue of sponsorship, the PRO intimated that several corporate entities have been rendering valuable support. However, he said that there is dire need for more tangible support. Two corporate bodies were singled out for commendation for corporate assistance rendered. They are Ricks and Sari Ltd and The Beharry Group of Companies Ltd.
Other activities planned for the rest of the year are: October 19— Bartica race, November 16 —Linden Walk Race and December 14—walk race from the Demerara Harbour Bridge to the Soesdyke junction.
