The philatelic arts in Guyana has been boosted with the addition of the Sir James Douglas commemorative stamp, which was presented to Prime Minister Samuel Hinds yesterday at his office in Wight’s Lane, Kingston.
The presentation was made by Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Charles Court in the presence of Chairman of the Guyana Post Office Corporation and the Ethnic Relations Commission, Bishop Juan Edghill, Conservation Officer of the National Trust, Narvana Persaud, and Post Master General (ag), Malen Adams, who are members of a special philatelic committee.
The stamp, which will be an exhibited item for the GPOC and the National Trust, is also a symbol of the 150th independence of British Columbia in Canada for which Sir James Douglas, a born Guyanese, became the first governor in the mid nineteenth century.
Sir James Douglas, who was honoured with a statue in his name at Mahaica recently, was born in Belmont, Mahaica, to the mother of a slave and the father of a wealthy Scottish planter.
Little is known about Sir Douglas locally and through the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Cultural Association of British Columbia in Canada, efforts are being made to promote this historic figure.
The Sir James Douglas stamp was launched on August 25, during a philatelic arts exhibition at the old GPOC office on Lamaha and Carmichael Streets, along with the Jesuits’ (Society for Jesus) stamp.
The Sir James Douglas stamp is a commemorative stamp which will also be issued around the world through the Inter-governmental Philatelic Corporation of New York.
