Nicolette Fernandes finally made it to Paraguay on Sunday morning after missing her connecting flight the day before, because of a delay out of Miami but nevertheless made a desired start to the South America Squash Championships currently underway in Paraguay.
Having been seeded one in the ladies draw, she received a bye into the quarter-final round and duly dispatched Naar Agustina Gomez of Argentina 9/3 9/1 9/2 to book her place in the semi-finals.
She is scheduled to come up against the tournament’s number four seed, another Argentine, Antonella Falcione. That match was expected to take place last evening at 18:45 local time.
In addition to the individual event, the South American championships also feature doubles as well as a team event.
This will mark Guyana’s first appearance at this event, but due to financial constraints Fernandes will be the only Guyanese athlete competing.
This means that Guyana’s participation will be limited to the ladies individual event.
