A 52-year-old Sophia man was shot yesterday while reportedly trying to relieve a police corporal of his firearm.
However, Ovid Jack, who is presently under guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital, is denying that he attempted to take away the policeman’s weapon.
A police press release stated that at about 08:30 hours yesterday, Jack, of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, was shot and injured by an armed police rank after he had attacked the rank in an attempt to disarm him.
The release explained that, acting on information received, the police had earlier gone to Jack’s home where they found cannabis sativa plants being cultivated in plant pots and a quantity of cannabis sativa in a bag in the house.
Jack was arrested but managed to escape from the police while being taken to the Turkeyen Police Station on foot.
The police subsequently returned to Jack’s house where he was re-arrested.
A search was conducted on his person and 85 grams of cannabis sativa were found in his crotch.
The police said that Jack was being taken to the station when he attacked Corporal 16961 Andrews and attempted to take away his .38 service revolver.
During the scuffle two rounds were discharged, one of which hit Jack in his right side chest.
Corporal Andrews sustained a wound to his left eye, abrasions about the body and an injury to his left knee. He was treated and sent away.
However, Jack related a different story and claimed that he will be vindicated in the court.
He claimed that the police jumped through his window without a warrant and accosted him.
“You ain’t see if I had a gun what woulda happen,” he told this newspaper.
According to Jack, he did not assault the cop and it was the cop who head-butted him causing him (the cop) to sustain his injuries.
“The policeman butt me and burst he own head,” Jack said.
His condition is listed as stable and he is expected to be charged upon being discharged from hospital.
