A man from the Essequibo Coast who is accused of abducting a teenage girl with intent of having carnal knowledge of her will know his fate later today.
The accused, Shoab Mohamed, made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle who read the charge to him.
It is alleged that on Monday, July 28, at Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, he abducted a female who is under the age of 18 without the consent of her parents with intent to have carnal knowledge of her.
To the charge he pleaded not guilty. He was represented by defense counsel Vic Puran. Puran in seeking reasonable bail for his client told the court that his client is 21 years of age and the case is very peculiar in that it was the mother of the accused who brought the matter to the police.
According to Puran, the teen was in the habit of seeking refuge at the home of the accused on the Essequibo Coast, and on the last occasion she was asked to leave but refused to do so. Puran added that the teen has since revealed several reasons why she did not want to return home.
According to Puran, the accused and the virtual complainant already have plans to get married. However, bail was refused and Mohammed is expected to return to court sometime today.
