Old Gold Roosters comprising three female Guyanese players in Amanda Garnette, Maria Munroe and Marisha Rodrigues emerged champions of the Banks Hockey Festival which was played recently in Barbados.
The Roosters made of players from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Germany and the United Kingdom defeated favourites Barbados National Under-21 team 2-1 in a hotly contested final that went into extra time when the winning goal was scored.
The champions ended with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss in the round robin segment and easily disposed of Decons of Barbados by a 3-1 in their semi-final encounter.
Special mention was made to the Hikers ladies from Guyana whom played significant roles on the team. Amanda Garnett was the major scoring force on the forward line with a total of nine (9) goals in the women’s category; multi talented Marisha Rodrigues made her contribution in the mid-field and forward line while Maria Munroe showed endless stamina to control the mid field.
The Hikers ladies were accompanied by their male team mates, Alex Gouveia, Azad De Abreu, Brian Asregado, Devin Munroe, Robert France and Shane Samuels in the mix category of the tournament.
These men participated in the male category, while Brian and Azad also played in the Veterans division.
The Roosters men won three (3) games and lost three (3), while in the mix division they secured four (4) wins, one (1) draw and one (1) loss.
Once again the Guyanese contingent played key roles in the structure of both the male and mix teams.
Senior players Asregado, Gouveia and Munroe delivered their usual hard work in the defence and midfield and they were complimented by rising stars Robert France and Shane Samuels, both of whom were exceptional on the forward line.
Azad De Abreu (Superman) was amazing in the Goal doing duties for the male, mix and veteran teams.
Although these players did not play as a Guyanese team, they certainly kept the Guyana flag flying on an international team.
