Police in Berbice are still detaining a 14-year-old boy as they intensify their investigations into the brutal murder of 13-year-old Kavita Panday.
The teenager was detained after giving investigators conflicting statements about his movements before and after the discovery of the girl’s body.
Panday was found dead near a canal at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice on Monday at around 14:00 hours.
Investigators believe she was raped and then murdered.
It was reported that the teenaged boy was seen with the deceased while she was heading to her parents’ farm.
When the child did not return her mother became worried and went in search of her.
While going to the farmland, she saw the 14-year-old coming out and enquired from him the whereabouts of her daughter.
He initially claimed that he did not see Panday, but subsequently admitted that he had accompanied her to the farm.
The teen then led the mother to an area where the child’s slippers and hat were found.
A source close to the investigation told this newspaper that upon examining the teenaged boy, they observed that he had what appeared to be scratch marks on his neck.
However there was no skin residue between the murdered child’s fingernails.
The source said that he got the scratches while climbing a genip tree.
This was substantiated by other residents who were interviewed by detectives.
A post mortem examination will be performed on Panday’s body today to determine the cause of her death.
