ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Bhigroog Poonai, said that the design for the Rose Hall Fire Station had to be modified.
This is as a result of rising costs and the intention to stick within the $15 million budget set for the project.
He explained that the size of the building would remain the same — 37 feet by 45 feet — but the design was tailored.
The foundation has already been cast, and the columns are now being erected.
Contractor Kenny, of East Canje, gave a December date for the completion.
According to Mr. Poonai, the actual structure would cost some $9 million and the driveway $1.5 million. The fence was completed at a cost of $1.5 million. The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce injected $1.5 million into the project after the recently concluded Berbice Expo and Trade Fair. Added to this was the $500,000 which represents proceeds from the 2005 Berbice Expo and Trade Fair.
In July, businessman Dave Balgobin, formerly of Bush Lot Village, Corentyne, who now resides in the United States of America, donated some $500,000 towards the establishment of the first fire station in Rose Hall Town. A few weeks ago, he gave an additional $100,000.
Head of the New Jersey Arya Samaj, Pandit Suresh Sugrim, in collaboration with the Guyana Central Arya Samaj Humanitarian Mission, handed over $100,000 in July.
Management of Spready’s Bakery at Port Mourant contributed some 2,500 concrete blocks, valued at approximately $225,000.
Humid and Sons’ Store at Fyrish gave $50,000 in hardware supplies, while another branch at Hampshire donated $120,000 worth of cement.
Dr. Ramesh Sugrim of Williamsburg injected $100,000 into the project. A number of other persons gave in cash and kind.
Mr. Poonai lauded all those who have assisted in any way. “We are indeed grateful to them for their benevolence. Their kindness has taken us a step closer to realizing our dream of having a fire station here in Rose Hall Town. This facility, though based here in Rose Hall, is expected to serve any area in need.”
The Rose Hall Interim Management Committee is presently providing the necessary security for the site.
In March this year, consolidation work on the 159 foot by 59 foot plot of land to house the fire station began. It is situated to the rear of the Rose Hall Police Outpost.
The building is being erected by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.
In the initial stages, manpower would be used from the Constabulary department of the Interim Management Committee as well as volunteers. The daily operation would be overlooked by members of the Guyana Fire Service.
Government, through the Guyana Fire Service, is prepared to train personnel and provide the fire fighting equipment.
The Chamber is appealing to stakeholders and well wishers to contribute in making this venture a success.
In East Berbice there are two fire stations. One is situated at New Amsterdam, which is some 14 miles (22 kilometres) from Rose Hall Town. The other is at Corriverton, which is 45 miles (73 kilometres) from New Amsterdam.
