– aims at making Guyana proudNational female basketball player, Nichola Jacobs left Guyana yesterday to fulfil an Antigua and Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABITT) basketball scholarship, which she was offered after touring the island in January.
Jacobs independently kept the women’s version of the sport active locally before the arrival of the Guyana Women’s Basketball Association last year. For her efforts, she was duly recognised previous to her departure.
Courts Guyana Incorporated covered her airfare to Antigua while a successful Division One game between Victory Valley Royals and Courts Pacesetters was held in her honour at the Mackenzie Sports Club court in Linden, Saturday night.
Kashif and Shanghai Kings also made a presentation to the top female athlete, who told Kaieteur Sport that her aim is to make Guyana proud while on the two–year stint. She is expected to pursue a degree in Business Administration.
Jacobs had toured Antigua in January as part of the national women’s association select team to play in a tournament. Two scouts, who were both present at the activity, recommended her for the scholarship after an outstanding performance.
After much thought, she accepted the erudition opportunity last month. Jacobs had represented Guyana at both the junior and senior levels. She became a member of Guyana’s national women’s team in 1997 after her debut in 1996. (Edison Jefford)
