Participants who attended the Technical Theatre Courses in preparation for Carifesta X were yesterday presented with certificates at a graduation ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre.
The students were trained in various aspects involving theatre production.
These included costume design and management, set design, construction and dressing, lighting and sound system arrangement, as well as make up and hairdressing.
The course was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
During Carifesta, the students were given the opportunity to utilize the skills they acquired.
In his feature address, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, congratulated the graduates on their excellent performance during the recently held event in Guyana.
He noted the enthusiasm of the students in applying the skills acquired, and said that they have made Guyana proud as they successfully carried out the tasks that were required of them to make Carifesta such a huge success.
“Because of their work, vibrancy has returned to the performing arts in Guyana and has given rise to an awareness of how theatre production in Guyana can serve the cause of bringing people together in unity.”
“This unity, which crossed barriers, is the real legacy that Carifesta has left us”, the minister pointed out.
Minister Anthony challenged the graduates to return to their communities and become involved in the performing arts at all levels. “Use your skills to teach others what you have learnt. Become mentors to others in your community,” he told the graduates.
Dr. Anthony urged the theatre technicians to keep the momentum going and continue the process of developing the performing arts in the country.
“Now that Carifesta in Guyana is completed, we have to focus on what happens beyond the festival,” he added.
Since a number of venues for performing arts have been resuscitated in different parts of the country, the minister suggested the formation of a National Theatre Company, a move he said will receive support from the Government.
“And the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports will initiate advanced training for some of those graduating,” Minister Anthony revealed.
In brief remarks, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said that the skills acquired by those graduating could be used in the provision of goods and services to benefit the country, especially in the area of enhancing tourism, as theatre productions can play a vital role in this important industry.
The Prime Minister said that an important aspect of the legacy of Carifesta is that “what we enjoyed was work produced by our citizens.”
The charge to the graduates was given by Pastor Philip Walcott, IDB Sectoral Specialist and Program Officer responsible for the Project.
He asked them to focus on maintaining the spirit of Carifesta with passion and commitment to the job. Pastor Walcott was high in praise for the outstanding performance the graduates showed during the festival.
Also making presentations were representatives of the IDB and UNDP.
