Following reports of an increase in malaria cases in the Omai area, which was dubbed as the number one hot spot in Guyana by the Ministry of Health, Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has revealed that his Ministry has been able to successfully reduce the transmission of the infection in the area.
Dr. Ramsammy, however, noted that strict monitoring continues to take place in the district, as for the past week the area has not been the number one ‘hot spot.’
In the meantime, Frenchman/Mabaruma and Arimo Creek in Region Seven (7) continue to be a challenge for the Ministry.
In this regard, Minister Ramsammy said that a malaria team is already in the area monitoring the situation in order to curb the infection.
As it relates to the increase in cases in those areas, the Health Minister noted that it is the result of more cases being reported, rather than the formation of new infections.
However, he noted that the Ministry is trying to figure out whether or not some of the cases may be duplicated.
Minister Ramsammy explained that most persons who have already been diagnosed and treated for the infection in areas like Mahdia and others would most of the time travel to the Georgetown Public Hospital for the same treatment and would fail to inform the doctor that they were already diagnosed with the infection.
The area of Omai was dubbed as the number one ‘hot spot’ in the country as it was explained that there is increased mining activity being carried out in the area by several small miners, who are in search of gold that is believed to still be in the area, abandoned by OMAI.
In this regard, Minister Ramsammy had urged residents, workers and miners in the area to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves, including using the impregnated bed nets provided by the Ministry of Health, through the Global Fund Malaria Project in Region Seven.
He had also advised that persons with the symptoms of malaria, which include fever, headaches, loss of appetite, sweating and joint pains, visit the nearest health facility so that they could benefit from early treatment.
