The 2008 New Building Society (NBS) second division 40 over cricket competition for teams in Berbice was launched on Friday last with an investment of $500,000 by the sponsors at a simple ceremony held at their New Amsterdam main office.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, senior Berbice regional Bank manager Anil Beharry, who is still an active cricketer and a former Berbice inter county player and also treasurer of the Berbice Cricket Board, said that the bank is pleased to be associated with cricket in the community and is happy to be able to give back to the sport.
He said that his company will always try to put back into the community, from which it garners its support. The manager said that the support the Bank receives from Berbice has been tremendous and they feel compelled to give back in a big way and noted that cricket is a good way to do so.
He stated that cricket covers a wide cross section of the population and involves persons from all walks of life. He gave the assurance that his bosses will agree to further sponsorship, once the competition is properly conducted and there is good accountability, which he said the board is noted for.
At the ceremony, a cheque of $300,000 was handed over to Vice President of the BCBC Mark Lyte, who thanked NBS for continuing to sponsor the competition and showing faith with the board. He gave the assurance that the competition will be well organized since the board is second to none in its organizing abilities. He expressed the hope that more companies will follow the example set by NBS.
Also present were assistant bank manager Rana Persaud, BCBC Secretary Angela Haniff and Assistant Secretary Romesh Munna and Competitions Committee Chairman Carl Moore.
This is the third year that the bank is sponsoring a cricket competition in the Ancient county (twice at second division and once at first division), starting since 2004. This year the competition is being sponsored to the tune of over $500,000.
According chairman of the competition committee of the board Carl Moore, over one hundred and five (105) teams will be participating in the competition this time around; the area has been divided into 16 zones covering the length and breadth of Berbice stretching from Abary on the West Coast of Berbice to Kortheberaadt, who will be playing for the first time on the East Bank of Berbice, to Crabwood creek in the Upper Corentyne area, including teams from the Berbice, Corentyne and Canje river areas.
The competition will get started on Sunday September 14 in 13 of the 16 zones. Competition in the Canje and Corentyne River areas begins the following Sunday September 21, while the Berbice river area will commence on Wednesday 17th.
The final is expected to be played in November.
