– Moffat voted MVP
Junior Lewis’ 53rd minute strike from close
range was what separated the two teams in the final of the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport-organised Buxton Inter-Block Football Tournament which ended yesterday, at the villages’ Community Centre ground.
Lewis playing for Middle Walk Back pounced on a cross delivered from the right by the speedy Kwame Moffat, before lashing a right-footer into the back of the net with Friendship Front goalkeeper well stranded.
In a match littered with many chances going a-begging due to poor finishing, it took the heroics of the dreadlocked Moffat to liven up the proceedings which was played before a very supportive and vocal band of fans from both teams.
In the first period, Middle Walk Back seemed the more purposeful, but failed to convert the opportunities they created, while Friendship Front lacked the potency upfront and rarely threatened.
The first half ended nil-all and both teams entered the final stanza looking for the opening goal.
A few near misses from the Friendship Front strikers was met with jeers from their fans, while Moffat was creating havoc on the right wing as he continuously mesmerised the opposition’s defence with some scorching runs down the flank.
It was one such occasion where he outran his marker and floated a cross into the goalmouth that met an unmarked Lewis and he finished clinically.
The final was attended by Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry Steve Ninvalle and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Keith Booker.
The teams received trophies and cash incentives which were presented by Dr. Anthony, while Booker handed over a pair of football boots to Most Valuable Player of the final Moffat.
In a friendly female encounter between ‘A’ and ‘B’ units of the Buxton Youth Developers, the former scored an easy 3-1 win with Amina Bryan netting a double, while Mithera Thomas tucked in the other. For the losers, Omatolla Wallace scored the consolation goal.
