Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon has revealed that Cabinet has unanimously retreated to fully examine the success of the recent hosting of CARIFESTA X in Guyana, and to identify lessons to be learnt from the experience.
At his post Cabinet media briefing on Thursday, Dr. Luncheon said that although an initial review was done of the event, the decision was made in response to calls from certain sections of society to completely examine the hosting of the event from all angles.
Luncheon said that Cabinet took note of the magnitude of responses by the regional governments, the financial outcomes and the urge by Guyanese to perform creditably.
According to Dr. Luncheon, the unprecedented level of mass support diffused any efforts of negativity and ‘muzzled’ those who complained regularly about things going wrong in Guyana during the hosting of the mega event.
“Cabinet recognized the value of the visitors who came and experienced the reality of Guyana.
That value related to the image of Guyana, Guyanese and their hospitality and that image was broadcast daily to the Caribbean and the world,” Luncheon noted.
Cabinet also concluded that the successful hosting of CARIFESTA X promoted Guyana and the region and was of inestimable value to the Caribbean identity.
“For Guyana, Cabinet concluded that the marketing of the event had to be done to exploit its occurrence,” Dr. Luncheon said.
When questioned recently on the success of the event, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony had noted that the public’s response to the event ‘said it all’.
He had said that the response clearly indicates that ‘culture’ can indeed bring people together and unite them as one.
A count taken by the CARIFESTA Secretariat at the different venues during the event showed that overall, about five-hundred thousand people attended the different shows and activities that took place.
