We get bucketloads of dosh, we are the prima donna ballerinas of GuyPress. Us columnists are the stars .We shift papers and some of us even shift from papers. Bill is on his third. But, readers, the science of propulsion it is not.
Bill’s guide to writing Do it Yourself (DIY) columns:
DIY FREDDIE
Put in the following elements – The PPP are an autocracy, I had a too humble background at Bourda, a man stopped me in street and told me a tale – I believed him, I teach University and I am brilliant, ‘Fineman’ looked too much like me. Stretch to 1000 words.
DIY PETER RAMSAROOP
Read an economics textbook, take copious notes. Reproduce them.
DIY RONALD SANDERS
As above with more Caribbean context. More insight.
DIY FRANKLY SPEAKING
I was in the PNC. Me plenty regret it now but I got lots and lots of stories about it. Stories about Guyanese folk tales too. I am THE man on the Street in the Woodbine. Nobody else.
DIY WEDNESDAY RAMBLINGS
Take a literary quote or classic book. Play with it. Apply it to Guyana however contorted the logic. Take the Michael or Robert or Bharrat out of the natives. Repeatedly. Then smell the coffee.
DIY WHISPERING MABEL
Take some words .Put them on the page. In some order.
DIY BILL COTTON/REFORM
Go to plenty of parties. Pick up tidbits of all sorts. Memorise them. Churn them out day after day.
Work with the following current factoids for your own DIY BC/R….
-Which three members of the Cabinet and which Ambassadors are about to play musical chairs with less chairs at the end?
-Is there a police outpost in the Botanic Gardens? Seem to be plenty of them resting there?
-How many minibuses turn up every day still at the Carifesta Secretariat? How many people still go there -do they not have other jobs to go to?
See what I mean? ‘Easy peasy, japaneasy’ as they say in school playgrounds in England.
Democratise the columns!! DIY!!
It make sense – as you Guyanese say!
