Permission has to be granted by Stanford selectors says Stanford 20/20 official
By Sean Devers
West Indies Test batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan along with national all-rounder Lennox Cush have not been selected in an 18-man Demerara squad for the El Dorado senior Inter-County 50 overs cricket competition which bowls off on September 27.
The trio, who missed the two trial matches used to pick the team, were not selected because of their commitment to a six-week Stanford Superstars training camp in Antigua as the regional team prepare to face England on November 1 in Antigua for an unprecedented US$41 Million first prize, the largest ever put up for a team sport.
However, Chairman of the Demerara selectors Michael Khan yesterday informed that the 28-year-old Sarwan, who has played 72 Tests and 172 first class games since becoming the region’s youngest first-class player in 1996, contacted him to make himself available to play in the Inter-County competition.
Sarwan is expected to arrive in Guyana next week from the USA where he was honouring some personal commitments and Khan said that once the West Indies Vice-Captain is available to play he will be accommodated in the team.
Khan had earlier stated that West Indies One-Day International left-hander Leon Johnson, who returned to England to complete his league contract after being picked for the Canada Tri-Nation series last month, will also be included in the Demerara team if he returns for the match although he was also not named in the training squad.
Cush is in the country but did not participate in the trails due to a sore calf muscle and Khan said that the batsman who bowls off-spin could also be considered for selection once he gets the all-clear to play.
“Sarwan called me to say he was interested in representing Demerara while I have also spoken with Cush. I have not heard from Chanderpaul but once is also available he will be in the team,” Khan said.
The 17 players selected for the Stanford Superstars side are on contract with the Stanford 20/20 Organization and Imran Khan, Communications and Media Manager, Stanford 20/20 told Kaieteur Sport that any player who wishes to be excused from the camp will have to write a letter to the Stanford Superstars selection panel detailing their reasons and seeking such excuse, the selection panel will then make a decision and inform the player.
“This was previously done in the case of Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the first camp when he had commitments to his county side Durham and was excused from the first preparatory camp.” Khan informed.
Berbice play Essequibo at Blairmont in the first round of the Inter County competition on September 27 before Demerara go into action the next day in Demerara against Berbice before facing Essequibo at Anna Regina in Essequibo in the final preliminary round on October 1. The final is fixed for October 5 at Bourda.
