Neal & Massy 1st division cricket…Barnwell’s ton spearhead DCC to crushing win against MSC

Traditionally, competition between Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) is fiery and explosive but yesterday’s Neal and Massy first division 40-overs encounter at the DCC ground turned out to be a damp squib as MSC were handed a sound 130-run trashing.
Twenty-one year-old Guyana all-rounder Chris Barnwell continued his good form with a belligerent unbeaten 121 as DCC scored 109 runs in the last 10 overs to reach 219-6 off 40 overs before dismissing the Thomas Lands side for 89 in 28.3 overs in a contest which was as embarrassing as it was loop-sided for MSC.
In sweltering heat and on a good batting track, DCC were pushed on the back foot at 58-2 off 20 overs as towering 24-year-old pacer Kwasie Nedd removed national under-19 opener Trevon Griffith (11) and trapped first-class batsman Travis Dowlin (1) leg before to put MSC in the driver’s seat at the half way stage.
West Indies under-19 Vice-Captain Steven Jacobs was again hard to get away with his improving off-spin and conceded just 20 runs from his eight overs to keep the shackles on the batsmen on the small Queenstown ground.
Skipper Jamal Hinkson (18), wicketkeeper Denver Greaves (12) and first-class pacer Trevon Garraway (10) were the only other batsmen in the DCC side to get into double figures as Jacobs, left-arm spinner Damien Vantull (2-24) and Nedd (2-20) made the batsmen work hard for their runs before Barnwell led the last innings recovery.
Barnwell, who opened the batting, saved the best for last and exploded with an array of pugnacious shots to gallop to his second century in local 50-overs first division cricket following his ton against Transport Sports Club three years ago.
He clobbered eight sixes and four fours in his 105-ball 121 and was especially severe on national 20/20 off-spinners Orin Forde (2-51 from six overs) and Deon Ferrier (2-48) as he entertained the vocal crowd with a boundary feast off the last 50 balls of the innings.

Imran Hassan (9) began MSC’s reply with two boundaries off Garraway before he miscued a pull of a quick short ball and spooned a catch to mid-on at 14-1.
It was soon 20-2 when off-spinner Kevin George, in his first game since his return from playing club cricket in Canada, got rid of Jacobs (1).
Jacobs, with two first-class matches under his belt, recklessly threw his wicket away with an impetuous lofted drive to long-off before he had settled as MSC slipped to 20-2.
Shemroy Barrington (10) was then run out at 32-3 before the injudicious shot selection continued when Ferrier recklessly played across the line and had his stumps scattered by the impressive George to leave the score on 34-4.
Six runs later, George, who bowled his arm ball beautifully to finish with 3-12 from eight overs, had Danny Narayan (2) stumped as MSC slumped to 40-5.
Randy Lindore (4) missed a sweep at off-spinner Denis Squires at 60-6 and with MSC now battling for survival, their last hope of a decent total was dashed when Forde, who hit three fours in 27, got an edge to a mighty swipe at Squires and was caught behind as the visitors catapulted to 63-7.
Leg-spinner Kester Harcourt had Vantull (3) taken at deep mid-wicket at 78-8 before Squires, who finished with 4-19, wrapped up the innings to end MSC’s misery with 11.3 overs remaining in the match.
