Next Monday, the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) will launch the opening session of a Social Inclusion Fund and African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) Programme called ‘Improving Access to Opportunities for At Risk Youths from Afro-Descendant Communities’.
The primary objective of the programme, according to ACDA sources, is to strengthen the leadership and skill-set capacity of thirty ‘at risk’ Afro-descendant youths from Buxton, Agricola and Albouystown to access, participate and benefit from opportunities in Guyana.
The youths will experience an intensive one-year programme and obtain certificates in areas such as Leadership and Community Development, and Agriculture and Environmental Management.
Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, Media and Inter-Community Dialogue, and Health and Healthy Lifestyles are other subject areas highlighted.
Apart from these subjects, the students will be exposed to life skills, values and global ideas.
ACDA reveals that its goal is to help young people to empower themselves educationally, culturally, economically, politically and socially.
At the end of the programme, the intent is for participants to become more employable, able to start their own businesses, or be better prepared to further their education.
Each student will have two local mentors, one business, one cultural, as well as an overseas mentor.
Monday’s session is slated to begin at 10:00hrs.
