Police question several employees
Police have questioned several employees of the Hydrometeorological Office following several leads which seem to indicate that Thursday’s fire at the entity’s Brickdam office might have been deliberately set.
This newspaper was told that, following the discovery of a flammable object within the office yesterday, police lifted fingerprints.
An alert employee, coupled with a quick response by the Guyana Fire Service, averted a disaster.
The fire was noticed by a senior employee at about 17:00 hrs on Thursday in a cupboard in an office located on the top flat of the three-storey building.
The employee was leaving the building when she noticed that the door of an office, which was supposed to be closed, was ajar.
Upon checking, flames were seen coming from a cupboard.
The office in which the fire was observed is said to be occupied by an employee who is currently in Barbados.
After the fire was spotted, an alarm was raised and the fire service responded promptly.
