– says entity failed to provide special effects for opening ceremony
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is seeking to recover several million dollars that a local company allegedly owes it for failing to provide equipment for the Carifesta X opening ceremony.
The ministry alleges that the entity failed to provide lighting and stage gear for the ceremony, although it had been paid in advance and had signed a contract to do so.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Keith Booker, told Kaieteur News yesterday that the issue is at present in the hands of the Attorney General.
However, he declined to reveal how much the company was paid.
One of the company’s officials also declined comment about the charges by the Culture Ministry, and efforts to reach the entity’s Managing Director proved futile.
In a letter sent to the company’s Managing Director, a copy of which was obtained by Kaieteur News, a Ministry of Culture official stated that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport had “extended and expended enormous support and resources” under the contract to ensure that the company met its contract responsibilities.
The letter added that the company “has to make an effort to fully compensate the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in light of the breach of contract”.
Kaieteur News understands that some personnel at the Carifesta Secretariat had expressed their reservations about the company’s ability to handle the project. The officials were reportedly told that most of the equipment was already in Guyana.
However, none of the lighting effects was provided by the company for the opening ceremony, and these had to be obtained from the National Cultural Centre. The Carifesta X opening ceremony was held on August 22 at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
Despite the absence of key equipment and problems with the sound systems, the programme was deemed a success by the large crowd which attended.
