Mark Joseph, of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, who is accused of stealing a quantity of jewellery from a city goldsmith, was on Thursday last granted bail in the sum of $100,000.
It is alleged that on August 29, 2008, the accused stole a quantity of gold jewellery, valued at $400,000 and a diamond valued at $70,000, the property of Daikarran Singh.
When Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson –Ogle asked whether the alleged victim had anything to say, Singh said that he and Joseph were about to open his workshop, when the accused said that he had to run an errand.
Singh said that after Joseph had left, he realized that the jewellery was missing.
He subsequently went to the man’s residence on a number of occasions, but Joseph was not there.
Eventually, the goldsmith said that acting upon information he received, he and some ranks from a nearby police station went to Joseph’s house.
Joseph was arrested and taken to the Alberttown Police Station.
According to Singh, the defendant had admitted to the police that he had committed the crime and said he was willing to reimburse Singh. .
When the magistrate asked whether this was true, Joseph denied the accusation.
However, the investigating rank at Alberttown Police Station told the magistrate that Singh’s version of events was correct.
The accused was represented by Attorney at Law Peter Hugh.
In a bail application he said that his client is a goldsmith by profession, has no criminal record and does not pose a flight risk.
Hugh said that in these circumstances bail should be granted at a reasonable sum.
Joseph was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 by Magistrate Robertson-Ogle.
The matter is to reconvene on October 15.
