A senior traffic rank of the Guyana Police Force has reiterated the call made by many, that causing death by dangerous driving should be made a non-bailable offence.
This comes in the wake of the officer, Audie Beckles, losing his daughter because of a reckless driver.
Twenty-four-year-old Alana Beckles died at around 13:00 hours yesterday while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s High Dependency Unit.
The woman was stuck by a route 44 mini bus on Camp Road, in the vicinity of Queens College, on Saturday last.
At the time, the dead woman was with a friend, who was also injured after the minibus reportedly ran into them while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The two women were reportedly waiting for an opportunity to cross the road. The friend was hospitalized, and was released from hospital only on Wednesday.
The dead woman’s father, in the midst of his grief, revealed that the driver who is responsible for his daughter’s death is a serving member of the Guyana Fire Service. He was arrested following the incident but released on station bail. The man was, however, rearrested sometime late yesterday afternoon.
“A lot of these people join these organisations to get their driver’s licence, and when they are not on duty they drive public transportation. They just do a crash course when they join these organizations,” Beckles said.
The man emphasised that the offence of causing death by dangerous driving should be made a non-bailable offence. He further lamented that drivers, once charged twice, should have their licenses revoked.
Alana Beckles is the mother of a three-year-old boy.
