The body of a man who reportedly fell into the Atlantic, on Tuesday, just off the coast at Lusignan, washed up at the Kitty foreshore yesterday.
The man’s remains were pulled out of the water sometime around 06:00 hours by police ranks who were summoned to the area by persons who were jogging on the seawall.
Meanwhile, the deceased has since been identified as 42 year-old Kenneth Melville, of Pigeon Island, East Coast Demerara.
Melville was positively identified by his father Neville Melville who was also present moments after the discovery.
The dead man’s father told this newspaper that he last saw his son alive on Sunday. According to the senior Melville, his son only took up the trade as a fisherman on Tuesday, which was the day he fell into the sea.
“He does normally wuk in de market, he does push cart and he cart get seize couple days back so he decide fuh go pon sea,” Melville said.
He added he was told that his son left on a fishing boat from the Lusignan foreshore on Tuesday morning.
According to Melville around 15:00 hours on Tuesday he received a message saying that his son fell overboard.
The man said yesterday morning his wife received a phone call saying that their son’s remains had washed ashore.
Still hoping for the best at the time of the call, Melville said his worst fears were confirmed when he arrived on the scene.
The captain of the boat which Melville reportedly fell off was detained by police to assist with investigations but has since released. Yesterday at the scene the boat captain declined to speak to the media, but was heard lamenting that Melville had a seizure and fell into the sea.
“Me aint know wha happen look yo gon see he tongue out he mouth I think he catch fits and da mussy happen and he fall in de river,” the man said.
This newspaper was also informed that the man while in police custody said that when Melville fell overboard other crew members had attempted to rescue him.
