A lot of talent is being wasted – Rodrigues
By Rawle Welch
Representative of the Central Rupununi Heritage Sports Committee Mark Rodrigues received a quantity of volleyballs and foodstuff from the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) and Toucan Industries respectively, during a simple ceremony which was held yesterday, at the latter’s Head Office in Kingston, Georgetown.
The gifts were presented to Rodrigues for use during sporting activities organised to commemorate Amerindian Heritage Month which will be held during the month of September with the main event scheduled for the 21st in St. Ignatius Village.
According to President of the GVF Lennox Shuffler, six villages has been earmarked to receive one ball each which is to be used to help strengthen the development process among the residents of the respective communities.

Those set to benefit are St. Ignatius, Moco Moco, Nappi, Yupukari, Kartaka Village and Lethem.
Additionally, Shuffler explained that very shortly the GVF will be sending personnel to conduct coaching and refereeing clinics in the communities as requested by the Committee.
The GVF Boss further informed that the Federation had always enjoyed a good relationship with most of the Amerindian communities, adding that the game is very popular in those areas and it is just a matter of providing the necessary exposure for the players, an element they intend to continue to offer in the future. He mentioned the recent visit to Georgetown by teams from Mabaruma and Moruca which saw them reach as far as the semi-finals in a friendly tournament which was played in the National Park.
He also reminded that it is the responsibility of the Central Heritage Sports Committee to assist in the further development of the sport in the various areas.
Rodrigues in response thanked both Shuffler and Toucan Managing Director Andrew King for their support which he referred to as timely. “The balls will certainly help to sustain the developmental plan that we have,” James said.
He, however, bemoaned the fact that while a few members of the sporting fraternity and business sector has always been supportive, many others only see the need to assist on special occasions and asked that this trend be stopped immediately.
“There is this suspicion that the playing field is not level and this has formed because when you compare us with other communities, you see a different level of support offered.”
He added that because of the sparse support, a lot of talent is being wasted in the Amerindian communities.
The preliminary phase starts on September 10 and last for five days.
