E’bo coach says his team is aiming to win CLICO U-17 title

According to Coach Vibert Johnson, the Essequibo under-17 team is not just here to participate in the CLICO under-17 two-day cricket competition which starts tomorrow at Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara. They are aiming to win the entire competition.
“Over the years we have been very competitive at the youth level and I think this year there is more talent in this team than I have seen in a while. We are here to win this competition and once everyone plays to their full potential we have the team to do it,” said Johnson, the national under-15 coach for the last two years.  
Johnson says his team had a four-day camp before the team was picked and is fairly satisfied with their preparation. He says while the team is a balanced one, he thinks the batting is the strength.
“We should arrive in Georgetown around four-o-clock tomorrow (today) and we are hoping to get a ground to have a practice session,” Johnson said last evening.
“Most of our players are all-rounders and we have quite a few who bowl medium pace. I know we can hold our own at this level against the best in the country and I am looking forward to a competitive competition,” Johnson stated.
He feels that Skipper Dwane Singh, Wicket Keeper Herrel Greene, Jermaine Horenkirk, Keron McLennon and Rensford Beaton are all competent batsmen.
“If Shawn Garraway gets going with his big hitting things could get pretty exciting. He is a strong youth who was in this year’s Guyana Under-15 team but had to be left home due to Chicken Pox. He and Guyana under-15 pacer Neil Ramalho are our main fast bowlers but Garraway could be used early in the order to step up the scoring in the first innings which is limited to 65 overs.
He could be one of the players to watch in this competition,” Johnson said.
Johnson promised Essequibo fans very good cricket and says that is good for the player’s development that the Essequibo will travel to both Demerara and Essequibo during this competition.
Essequibo, with five players back from last year’s tournament, face Demerara from tomorrow in the opening game before they journey to Berbice to battle defending champions Berbice.
