According to Club President Colin Elcock, who presided over a press briefing yesterday, five of the races have been classified as feature events with the ‘C’ and Lower over1200 metres, the main affair of the day.
Among the favourites in this race is the mare Sequin, while stiff opposition could come from the Chestnut gelding Delmur Gold and Miss Republic out of the Elcock stables and the American bred Annie’s Play Mate.
The other features are the ‘F’ and Lower which will be contested over 1600 metres; 2 year-old Maiden Stakes over a distance of 1000 metres; 3 year olds who will journey over 1600 metres and the G&H over 1100 metres.
The full acre is: G&H over 1100 metres with a 1st prize of $90,000; Race 2- ‘L’ Class over 1200 metres for a 1st prize of $50,000; Race 3- ‘L’ Class Division 2 over 1100 metres with 1st prize $40,000; Race 4- ‘F’ & Lower over 1600 metres for a 1st prize of $140,000; Race 5- J&K Classes over 1200 metres for a 1st prize of $60,000; Race 6- I & Lower over 1200 metres with 1st prize $70,000; Race 7- 2year old maidens for Guyana and West Indies bred horses over 1000 metres with a 1st prize of $100,000; Race 8- ‘C’ & Lower over a distance of 1200 metres for a 1st prize of $300,000.
Some of the other top horses on show will be Jumbo Joy, Face the Music, Fairy Tale Romance, Perfect Drift, Alphabet, Sir Balajee and Miss Republic.
Starting time is 13:00 hrs and the Organisers are asking all horse owners and those directly related to the Meeting to be at the facility on time for a prompt beginning.
Meanwhile, Elcock speaking at the briefing urged journalists to do some investigative work and see how big an industry horse racing is that can create additional revenue for the country.
“I am hoping that the sport is presented with the opportunity to lift its standard once again and mirror that of the glory days of Durban Park which at one time was the Mecca for the sport in the Caribbean.”
